Public Health

City Health Officers work primarily in two major areas - health inspections of food establishments and lead poison prevention in children.

The Health Department works closely with the PA Department of Agriculture and the Lancaster City Fire Department to maintain the health and safety of all food establishments and food vendors. Our Health Officers inspect local food establishments at least twice a year, and issue Licenses for Food Vendors at Special Events. Check out our Health Inspection FAQs to find out what to expect during an inspection, or to learn more about Food Safety Certification.

The other area of concentration for the Health Department is our Lead Poison Prevention Program. This program works with medical personnel, parents, homeowners and painting contractors to remove lead based paint from properties, and to help lead poisoned children. Lead poising is preventable and the Health Department works diligently with the community to make sure that the public is protected from dangers of lead. For more information, please see our Lead Poisoin Prevention FAQs.
